The word ‘Yoga’ means unity or oneness, in other words a feeling of being part of something. It is an ancient practice that is becoming more and more popular in response to the pressures of modern life. Yoga is one of the original systems which today would be labelled as holistic, as it recognizes that the body, breath, emotions, mind and consciousness are all related. Although it was developed thousands of years ago, Yoga is remarkably relevant for our needs today. The stretches involved carefully ease tightness and restriction out of the body, the held postures give strength as well as flexibility, the breathing practices help balance the nervous system, and the mental focus encouraged gives a calmness and clarity of consciousness.

The practice of Yoga is one of the most effective ways of reducing physical and mental stress simultaneously, leading to a feeling of inner wellbeing. In our modern world with its increasing pressures, the importance of being able to relax and find this type of inner peace has become very apparent.

At the Bardon Counselling & Natural Therapy Centre three experienced Yoga teachers conduct their weekly classes. Fran Archer specializes in teaching gentle classes, including one that is suitable for people who are new to Yoga; Jane Campbell-Kaye teaches a wonderfully informative and supportive ante-natal class; and Peter Bisson teaches classes that are a very well-balanced combination of strengthening, stretching and relaxing.
